Vocational Education and Training

In addition to the mentioned media and educational activities, the project strengthened the environmental components in teaching and training of two Integrated Vocational Education and Training (IVET) schools in Sayaboury and Houaphan in 2013. These schools are supported by Lao-German cooperation programs, e.g. through advisors on school management. The project contributed to the integration of climate-related content into selected vocational education programs. This should benefit students learning about correlations between their vocation and environmental protection and climate change.

The focus of a study conducted in 2013 was on five vocations closely related to environmental issues: crop production, animal husbandry, carpentry & furniture, electrics, small engine repair. The study looked into the profiles of the two IVET schools in terms of structure, extent and content of actual environmental education, differentiation between theoretical and practical training, materials and learning aids as well as teacher qualification.

The recommendations for ProCEEd were identified on the basis of suitability, resources and impacts. Educational material such as textbooks for environmental education, concepts on environmental topics, teaching materials and learning aids should be provided in line with curricula adaptation and teacher training. Volunteer groups and green schools should be promoted in order to foster support for on environmental education. ProCEEd identified specific activity packages on the basis of the study recommendations. These activities helped meet one of the four indicators for success of the project’s first phase from 2012-2014.
