Environmental Education Tours for the Young

ProCEEd supported the Green Care Fund in eight of its tours to the Phou Kha Khouy National Protected Area from January to March 2013. The 2-day tours put young people from Vientiane Capital and villages of Vientiane Province in touch with nature. In an entertaining way they learn about the environment and the forest. The Fund launched by Green Discovery Laos, an ecotourism company, operates dozens of trips per year.

Lecture teams from the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science of the National University of Laos as well as national park staff engage the children and youth in lectures, nature walks and environmental education games and plays. The 4-hour forest hikes are not only a healthy exercise for the students but the latter will also learn about the forest, its role as an ecosystem and the use of forest products such as wood, food, medical plants and seeds.

ProCEEd team leader Dr. Michael Trockenbrodt stated: “We support the aim of the Green Care Fund to promote awareness and need for nature conservation among Lao youth. Such trips may be a model for future ProCEEd activities and might have potential to be extended to its target provinces.”
