Survey Results Presented on Environmental Awareness in Lao PDR

During a meeting at Settha Palace Hotel in Vientiane on 6 August 2013, ProCEEd presented results from a survey on the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding environment, biodiversity and climate change.  Participants in the conference comprised representatives of government and non-government, civil society mass and donor organizations, mass media, and the private sector who had also been interviewed for the survey in 2012.

After an introduction to the rationale of the survey by Ms Souvanny Phonevilay, Deputy Director General of the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, ProCEED team leader Dr. Trockenbrodt provided an overview of major findings from the KAP survey. He highlighted that “Alarmingly, half of the respondents agreed to exploit the environment for satisfying human needs as they do not believe that the environment is in danger.”

Participants discussed the research results and methodo-logical aspects of the survey approach. For more than an hour, they also had the opportunity to visit a photo exhibition related to the field implementation of the KAP study. KAP study interviewers from DEQP and the Lao National University were available to answer questions regarding the difficulties and hardships of the survey’s field implementation.

Economic and political decision makers in Vientiane Capital, Thakek, Sam Neua and Sayaboury Capital as well as more than 50 villages in the Khammoaune, Huaphan and Sayaboury provinces were involved in interviews and focus group discussions between September and November 2012.
