Preparation for Environmental Bus Tours 2015

On 25-27 March, 2015, ProCEEd held a workshop at Vientiane Plaza Hotel to prepare DEQP staff and PADETC volunteers for environmental awareness activities during the 2015 environmental bus tours. DEQP staff and PADETC volunteers, who implement this year’s bus tours to Khammouane, Huaphan and Sayaboury, need to upgrade necessary knowledge and skills in order to enhance their work related to environmental protection.

Participants apply their newly gained knowledge and skills during regular visits of more than 60 local villages in the three provinces, the so-called village tours. ProCEEd’s environmental bus tours aim at increasing villagers’ awareness and understanding of as well as positive attitudes towards the environment. In addition, so-called government tours inform representatives of government agencies in provincial and district capitals on themes relevant to environmental protection, biodiversity and climate change.

In 2015, the project’s environmental vehicles tour Khammouane in April and November/December, Huaphan in May/June and September/October and Sayaboury in May/June and October/November. DEQP staff takes over the so-called government tours while PADETC volunteers run the village tours.

The workshop first reflected on previous awareness raising activities during bus tours in the targeted provinces in 2013-2014. This gave participants a chance to learn from tested approaches and come up with improved and more effective activities. The moderator divided participants into small working groups who discussed their experience before presenting results to the plenary. The moderator introduced new methods and tools that help the teams utilize games and exercises to communicate forest and biodiversity co-management concepts. Participants had the opportunity to practice the games and activities before summarizing their assessments. The teams in charge of the so-called village and government tours finally planned next steps for their upcoming tasks, i.e. the Khammouane village tour on 4-12 and18-26 April, respectively the government tour on 25-30 April, 2015.
