Winners of Environmental Photo Competition 2015 Announced

Vientiane, 30 November 2015 – The winners of the 2nd Environmental Photo Competition have been honoured with an official ceremony at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) in Vientiane. The Director General of the Department for Environmental Quality Promotion of MoNRE, Mr Khampadith Khammounheuang, presented the winner with their awards.

Earlier this year, the German Development Cooperation project ‘Promotion of Climate-related Environmental Education’ (ProCEEd), invited the public to submit printed or digital photos on environmental issues in Laos. It was the second time that ProCEEd organised the photo competition. "It was difficult for the jury to choose the winners because so many high quality photos of the beauty of our environment and of the severe threats to our environment were submitted", Mr Khampadith stated in his opening remarks.

Out of more than 100 submissions, Mr Phoonsab Thevongsa won the competition including prize money of 3,000,000 LAK for his picture of wildlife being illegally traded at a local market in northern Laos. The photo illustrates the importance for wildlife as a food source and, at the same time, the danger of hunting too much to sustain a healthy wildlife population.

Runner-up Mr Anouphon Phomhacsar won 2,500,000 LAK for his photo on the natural beauty of the Nam Xong river in Vangvieng District of Vientiane Province. The third prize of 1,500,000 LAK was awarded to Mr Po Thor. His photo of a single person in front of a huge rubbish dump in the vicinity of Luang Prabang warns about the impact humans have on the environment and calls for improved waste management, waste avoidance and recycling.

Seven more photographs received a Certificate of Recognition which includes prize money of 500,000 LAK.The best photos of the competition will be pieced together for a photo exhibition. The exhibition will be displayed at schools and government offices in the Vientiane area and in the Provincial Capitals of ProCEEd’s project areas.
